Sophie Rushton-Smith, PhD

Sophie is a skilled medical writer/editor and researcher, with broad experience across a wide range of therapeutic indications and in a variety of media. Sophie has written extensively in the field of outcomes research and has published in her own right.

Sophie graduated with an honours degree in biological sciences. She went on to do a PhD in parasitology and epidemiology at The Natural History Museum and King’s College, London. She has been a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine since 1999.

Sophie started her career in medical publishing in 1993 when she joined the Blackwell publishing group as Technical Editor for the British Journal of Urology. Sophie went on to become Senior Editor at Blackwell Healthcare Communications. In 1997 she became Managing Editor at Medi Cine International, a company specializing in 3-D computer animation, video, web sites and interactive CD-ROMs. Sophie set up MedLink Healthcare Communications in 1999. Sophie was a Senior Academic Fellow at the Thrombosis Research Institute, London, from 2010 to 2015.

Clare Carolan, BPharm (Hons), DipM

Clare has directed and led numerous successful healthcare communications programmes across a wide range of platforms ― including development and implementation of global strategic programmes, publication planning, meetings management, and patient and physician education and communications.

Clare has worked in healthcare for more than 20 years. Having qualified with a degree in pharmacy from the University of Wales, over the next 10 years she pursued her interest in clinical pharmacy, holding a number of senior roles including commissioning and setting up pharmacy departments in new-build hospitals. Subsequently, Clare spent 4 years within the pharmaceutical industry where she also undertook a Diploma in Marketing. Clare joined Blackwell Healthcare Communications in 1992, with a broad remit to develop the international healthcare communications business. Four years later, she was appointed to the Blackwell Healthcare board. Clare was a non-executive director of Avenue Healthcare Knowledge Management between 1999 and 2004. She continues to provide strategic business planning and communications support to a number of other companies across a range of sectors, including the voluntary sector, as an Associate Director.

Clare’s collective breadth of experience and knowledge gives her a unique insight into the healthcare market both internationally and within the UK ― into the roles and responsibilities of healthcare purchasers and providers, the industry and the needs of clinicians, consumers and patients.

Nadine Small, DPhil (Oxon), Senior Writer

Nadine is an accomplished medical writer with a strong scientific background and extensive experience in healthcare communications.

Nadine graduated with an honours degree in biochemistry from Dundee University, and completed her DPhil in signal transduction at Wolfson College, Oxford in 1989.

Nadine started her career in healthcare communications in 1989 when she joined SilverPlatter Education Ltd as a Scientific/Medical Writer, writing scripts for interactive CD-ROM-based training programmes for clinicians, research scientists and undergraduate students of the life sciences and medicine in the USA.

Nadine worked as a Senior Medical Writer at Dragon Communications Ltd and Blackwell Healthcare Communications, writing video scripts, primary and secondary publications, abstracts, posters, meeting reports, consensus guidelines, slide lecture kits and newsletters, and contributing to proposal development and strategic publication planning. Nadine was appointed Head of Writing at BHC in 1998, and Director of Healthcare Knowledge Management Services in 2000.

Jenny Lloyd, BSc, PhD

Jenny has been a medical writer/editor since 2000. She spent 3 years working in a Medical Communications company, and has since worked on a freelance basis.

Jenny has experience of writing and editing reviews, clinical papers, training courses, slide sets and notes, posters, and abstracts in a wide range of therapeutic areas. Also, meeting attendance and reports.

Jenny graduated with a first class honours degree in chemistry from the University of Nottingham, followed by a PhD in synthetic organic chemistry from the University of Exeter.
